Day 1 (July 6, 2019): Europe Bound!

Having booked today’s flights in early August 2018, it seemed like today would never arrive. But alas, here we are!  Time has a funny way of sneaking up on a person, doesn’t it?

Our long-time friends, Boneta and Floyd, picked us up at 3PM and whisked us off to Halifax Airport. By 3:45, we were eating a late lunch at Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge. 

Take off was right on time (at 5PM), as was arrival at Toronto Pearson. With only an hour connection time, there was no time to waste to get from one end of the airport to the other. But in the end, our Paris flight was half an hour late leaving. It means a very tight connection at Charles de Gaulle for our flight on to Belarus, which is on a separate ticket. So I’m sure it will be a nail-biter. 

But we have 7 hours overnight on a Boeing 777-300 with a brand new interior cabin. So, for now, we will put a possible missed connection out of our minds and focus on catching up on zzz’s and enjoying the ride across the pond.  The crazy preceding months are behind us, summer vacation is underway, and we will go with the flow!

Day 9 (July 14, 2019): Transnistria - Amazing!

The Tiraspol train station was a very eerie place when we arrived just after dark last night.  A small group of us disembarked the train in Tiraspol, and as the train pulled away towards Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, I think we all wished we were going with it!  A Transnistrian official led us into the dark station and then set up his computer and started processing everyone.  We were expecting to have to bribe him for some excuse of a reason, but in the end, it was an easy process and we were out of there in no time.  Fearing that any cab-driver who might be waiting at the station might kidnap us or feed us to a pack of wolves (one's mind tends to get carried away when one reads on Global Affairs Canada's site to "avoid all travel to Transnistria" !), I had pre-arranged a driver from the hotel to meet us.  He didn't speak a word of English, but we felt comfortable that he was honest and would take us to the hotel. Day 3 (July 8, 2019): Up, Down and All Around Minsk!

Despite a six-hour time-change, we were so exhausted that we slept a regular night and were up by 8AM.  Today was a 12-hour day that encompassed 27,000 steps, according to my watch, and nine Metro or bus rides all over Minsk. While the day's sights are shown below, we have to mention a true highlight: stumbling on a ballet performance at the impressive Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus.  Many European stages are dark, come July and August, so it is a bit of a rarity to find a live performance. Lunch was in a wonderful cafe overlooking the stark Soviet war memorial in Victory Square, while dinner was a traditional Belarusian meat pie (rabbit and spinach) in the restored Upper Town. By the way, those nine transit rides (18 tickets between us) cost $8 Canadian.  Try traveling all over New York or Toronto for $8!  And those ballet tickets - for a production that was every bit on par with something you'd see at the Bolshoi in Moscow - cost $8 for two tickets!  Minsk i...

Day 16 (July 21, 2019): Heading home!

Over dinner last night, we both agreed that we thoroughly enjoyed the five countries we experienced on this trip, but that we were also ready to sleep in our own bed.  So as much as that early alarm was annoying, it also carried with it some anticipation and excitement.  International travel - especially with summertime packed flights - is never a real joy:  you just grit your teeth and head into it, determined to get it over with.  Three things happened, however, on our trek home that added frustration to an already long-haul.  First:  we had pre-booked a group of two seats on our nine-hour flight from Istanbul to Montreal.  The seat configuration is 2-4-2, and a cluster of two seats makes it so much more comfortable for an overseas flight.  But when we got to the Pristina Airport, Turkish Airlines gave us boarding cards showing middle seats.
